Avicef is a potent, third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic specifically engineered to treat severe bacterial infections. In the Nigerian clinical market, Avicef contains Ceftriaxone Sodium (typically 1g). It works by irreversibly binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This leads to the rupture (lysis) of the bacterial cell wall and subsequent death of the pathogen. Due to its high stability against many bacterial enzymes, Avicef is a foundational clinical choice for systemic and localized infections.
Product Type: Third-Generation Cephalosporin Antibiotic
Active Ingredient: Ceftriaxone Sodium (1g)
Manufacturer: Furen Pharmaceutical Group / Tyonex Nigeria Limited
Pack Size: 1 Vial (Powder for Injection) + Diluent (Water for Inj. or Lidocaine)
Route: Intravenous (IV) or Intramuscular (IM)
Availability: Strictly Prescription Required (POM) — Clinical administration only
Suitable For: Adults and children (excluding neonates with hyperbilirubinemia)
Avicef is a primary clinical choice for high-stakes bacterial eradication:
Severe Respiratory Infections: Treating pneumonia and complicated bronchitis.
Meningitis: One of the few antibiotics that effectively crosses the blood-brain barrier to treat infections of the brain's lining.
Septicemia (Blood Poisoning): Rapidly clearing systemic bacterial infections in the bloodstream.
Abdominal Infections: Treating peritonitis or biliary tract infections.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Managing complicated or resistant kidney and bladder infections.
Surgical Prophylaxis: Preventing infections before, during, or after major surgical procedures.
Gonorrhea: A highly effective single-dose treatment for specific sexually transmitted infections.
Allergy Alert: Do NOT use Avicef if you have a known severe allergy to Ceftriaxone, Penicillins, or other Cephalosporins. Anaphylaxis can occur. Neonatal Risk: Avicef must not be used in premature infants or newborns with jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia), as it can lead to brain damage (kernicterus). Calcium Interaction: Do NOT mix or administer Avicef with calcium-containing intravenous solutions (like Ringer’s Lactate), as this can form dangerous particles in the lungs and kidneys. Gallbladder/Liver: High doses can cause "sludge" in the gallbladder. Report any severe abdominal pain immediately. Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea: If you develop severe, watery, or bloody diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately; this may be a sign of a C. diff infection.
For maximum safety and efficacy, Avicef must only be administered by a licensed healthcare professional in a clinical setting.
Standard Dosage (Guideline Only):
Adults: Typically 1g to 2g once daily. In severe cases, the dose may be increased to 4g.
Gonorrhea: Usually a single 250mg or 500mg intramuscular injection.
Administration Tips:
Intramuscular (IM): The powder is often dissolved in Lidocaine (1%) to reduce the significant pain associated with a deep muscle injection.
Intravenous (IV): The powder is dissolved in Sterile Water for Injection and administered slowly over 2–5 minutes or as an infusion over 30 minutes.
Timing: Because of its long half-life, Avicef is usually given only once every 24 hours.
Common side effects include pain or a "lump" at the injection site, rash, diarrhea, or changes in white blood cell counts (detected by lab tests). Some patients may experience nausea or vomiting. If you experience sudden swelling of the face, difficulty breathing, or severe skin peeling, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Store the unconstituted powder in a cool, dry place below 25°C, protected from light. Once the solution is mixed (reconstituted), it should ideally be used immediately. If necessary, it can be stored for up to 24 hours in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). Keep out of reach of children.
Q: Is it the same as "Rocephin"?
A: Yes. Rocephin is the original brand name for Ceftriaxone. Avicef is a high-quality brand that contains the same active ingredient and performs the same clinical function.
Q: Why is "Lidocaine" included in the pack?
A: Ceftriaxone injections into the muscle can be very painful. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic used as a diluent to numb the area during the injection. Note: Lidocaine-mixed Avicef must never be injected into a vein.
Q: Can I take it for a "Cold or Flu"?
A: No. Avicef only kills bacteria. It has no effect on viruses like the common cold or influenza.
Q: Can I use it while "Breastfeeding"?
A: Small amounts pass into breast milk. It is generally considered safe, but you should inform your doctor if you are nursing.
