Benzoyl Peroxide is a potent antimicrobial and keratolytic agent used globally for the treatment of acne vulgaris. It works through a powerful three-way action: first, it releases active oxygen into the pores to kill Cutibacterium acnes bacteria (which cannot survive in oxygen-rich environments); second, it helps shed dead skin cells to prevent clogged pores (comedolysis); and third, it reduces inflammation and redness. Unlike topical antibiotics, bacteria do not develop resistance to Benzoyl Peroxide, making it an ideal long-term solution for persistent breakouts.
In Nigeria, Benzoyl Peroxide (available in strengths like 2.5%, 5%, and 10%) is a staple clinical choice for achieving clear skin. It is available through registered pharmacies like Sanlive Pharmacy to ensure customers receive authentic, high-stability gels and washes manufactured under strict dermatological standards (such as Galderma’s Benzac or Acnecide) and stored in temperature-controlled environments to maintain the oxidizing potency of the formula.
Important: This is a powerful topical medication. Bleaching Warning: Benzoyl Peroxide will bleach dyed fabrics, including towels, pillowcases, and hair. Wash your hands thoroughly after application and use white linens during treatment. Sun Sensitivity: This product increases your skin's sensitivity to UV rays; always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen during the day. Do not use on broken or severely irritated skin.
Benzoyl Peroxide Gels and Washes are primarily used to:
Rapidly kill acne-causing bacteria on the skin’s surface and inside the pores
Clear existing whiteheads, blackheads, and inflammatory "red" pimples
Prevent new breakouts by keeping the pores free of oil and dead skin cell buildup
Reduce the appearance of oily skin by drying excess sebum
Treat "maskne" (acne caused by prolonged mask-wearing) and body acne (backne)
Act as an effective "spot treatment" for sudden, painful blemishes
This product is suitable for:
Teenagers and adults suffering from mild to moderate inflammatory acne
Individuals with oily, congestion-prone skin who require deep pore cleansing
Patients who have not responded to milder over-the-counter salicylic acid treatments
Athletes or active individuals dealing with body acne caused by sweat and friction
Not recommended for: Individuals with extremely sensitive or eczema-prone skin. It is strictly contraindicated for those with a known hypersensitivity to Benzoyl Peroxide. Use with caution during pregnancy or breastfeeding; consult our pharmacist for the safest concentration (usually 2.5% or 5%) for your specific situation.
For Gels: Apply a thin layer to the affected areas once or twice daily, or as directed by your dermatologist
For Washes: Massage into wet skin, leave on for 30 to 60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly and pat dry
Start Slow: If you are new to the product, start with a 2.5% or 5% strength every other night to allow your skin to build tolerance
Avoid the delicate eye area, lips, and nostrils to prevent severe irritation
Always follow with a non-comedogenic (oil-free) moisturizer to prevent excessive dryness or peeling
If using other actives like Retinoids, consult our pharmacist on how to "sandwich" or rotate these products safely
Benzoyl Peroxide is highly effective, but most users will experience:
Mild dryness, redness, or peeling (especially during the first 2 weeks)
A temporary "stinging" or "warming" sensation upon application
Increased sensitivity to wind, cold, and sunlight
Rare: Severe skin irritation or blistering (contact dermatitis)
Rare but serious: Swelling of the face or eyes (allergic reaction)
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe itching, hives, or difficulty breathing, as these are signs of a rare but serious allergic reaction.
Galderma (Benzac/Acnecide), Perrigo, or reputable dermatological firms – These manufacturers ensure the peroxide is stabilized in a vehicle that maximizes penetration while minimizing skin barrier disruption.

Is the 10% strength better than the 5%?
Not necessarily. Clinical studies show that 2.5% and 5% are often just as effective as 10% but cause much less irritation and redness. We usually recommend starting with 5% and only moving up if your skin is extremely oily and resistant.
Can I use this with my Retinol cream?
Be careful! Using both at the same time can be very irritating and may "cancel out" the effects of the Retinol. It is usually best to use Benzoyl Peroxide in the morning and your Retinol at night.
Why is my skin peeling so much?
Peeling is a sign that the medicine is working to turn over your skin cells. However, if it becomes painful, reduce your usage to every other day and use a thicker, oil-free moisturizer.
Where can I purchase Benzoyl Peroxide in Nigeria?
