Moxifloxacin is a potent, broad-spectrum ophthalmic antibiotic. As a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone, it is designed to treat serious bacterial infections of the eye by inhibiting the enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication and repair. Its advanced molecular structure allows it to kill a wider range of bacteria—including many strains that have become resistant to older antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin or Gentamicin.
Product Type: Fourth-Generation Fluoroquinolone Antibiotic (Ophthalmic)
Manufacturer: Fidson Healthcare Plc
Active Ingredient: Moxifloxacin (as Hydrochloride) — 0.5% w/v
Pack Size: 5ml Sterile Dropper Bottle
Route: Ophthalmic (Eye Drops)
Availability: Prescription Required (POM) — Pharmacist consultation mandatory
Suitable For: Adults and Infants (older than 7 days)
Moxifloxacin is primarily indicated for the treatment of Bacterial Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) caused by susceptible strains of bacteria. Because of its superior penetration into the eye tissues and its high potency, it is also frequently used by eye surgeons as a Prophylaxis (preventative treatment) before and after cataract or LASIK surgery to prevent sight-threatening endophthalmitis. It effectively eliminates pathogens that cause sticky discharge, intense redness, and eyelid swelling.
Complete the Full Course: You must continue using the drops for the entire duration prescribed by your doctor, even if your eye looks and feels normal after 24 hours. Stopping early allows the strongest bacteria to survive, leading to a "rebound" infection and contributing to global antibiotic resistance. Do not wear contact lenses while you have an active eye infection. The preservative in some formulations can also be absorbed by soft lenses and cause further irritation.
The standard dose is usually one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days.
Application Technique:
Wash your hands thoroughly.
Tilt your head back and pull down the lower lid to create a small pocket.
Instill one drop into the pocket without letting the dropper tip touch your eye, eyelashes, or any surface.
Close your eye and press gently on the inner corner (near the nose) for 1 minute. This keeps the medicine in the eye and reduces the amount that drains into your system.
Common side effects include a temporary decrease in visual acuity (blurring), a dry eye sensation, or a mild stinging/burning immediately after instillation. Some patients may notice a bitter taste in the mouth as the drops drain through the tear ducts. If you develop a skin rash, swelling of the face, or severe eye pain, stop use immediately and contact our pharmacist.
Store below 25°C to 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Do not freeze. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Crucial Safety Rule: Discard the bottle 4 weeks after opening, even if there is liquid remaining. Using eye drops beyond this period significantly increases the risk of introducing a secondary bacterial infection.
Q: Why is this better than Ciprotab drops?
A: Moxifloxacin is a later generation of antibiotic. It is more effective against "Gram-positive" bacteria and is less likely to be resisted by modern "superbugs." It also typically requires fewer applications per day.
Q: Can I use this for "Apollo" (Viral Pink Eye)?
A: No. Moxifloxacin only kills bacteria. It will not cure a viral infection. However, doctors may prescribe it to prevent a bacterial infection from starting while the eye is weakened by a virus.
Q: Can I use it for my newborn baby?
A: Moxifloxacin is one of the few fluoroquinolones licensed for use in infants as young as 7 days old, but it must be used strictly under a pediatrician's guidance.
Q: How soon will I see results?
A: Most patients notice a visible reduction in redness and sticky discharge within 24 to 48 hours of starting treatment.
Q: Do I need a prescription?
A: Yes. To protect the effectiveness of this advanced antibiotic and ensure your infection is bacterial, a valid prescription is required at Sanlive Pharmacy.
