Piperacillin and Tazobactam is a combination of Piperacillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin-class antibiotic, and Tazobactam, a β-lactamase inhibitor. Piperacillin kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis, while Tazobactam prevents bacterial enzymes (β-lactamases) from breaking down Piperacillin, thereby extending its antibacterial activity.
Uses:
This combination is used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, intra-abdominal organs, skin and soft tissues, and gynecological infections. It is also used in the management of septicemia and neutropenic sepsis. Due to its broad spectrum, it is particularly useful against infections caused by β-lactamase–producing organisms.
