XYLASE-T EYE DROPS — ADVANCED GLAUCOMA CONTROL (2.5ML)

Xylase-T is a potent, dual-action ophthalmic solution specifically designed to lower high pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). By combining a prostaglandin analogue with a beta-blocker, it provides superior pressure reduction compared to using either medication alone, making it a key treatment for managing chronic eye conditions and preventing vision loss.

  • Product Type: Combination Ophthalmic Solution (Prostaglandin + Beta-Blocker)

  • Manufacturer: Available via HubPharm and other specialized African distributors

  • Active Ingredients: Latanoprost ($0.005\%$) and Timolol (as maleate, $0.5\%$)

  • Pack Size: 2.5ml Sterile Dropper Bottle

  • Route: Ophthalmic (Eye Drops)

  • Availability: Prescription Required (POM) — Pharmacist consultation mandatory

  • Suitable For: Adults with Open-Angle Glaucoma or Ocular Hypertension

What Is Xylase-T Used For?

Xylase-T is indicated for the reduction of intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with Open-Angle Glaucoma or Ocular Hypertension who have not responded sufficiently to single-agent eye drops.

  1. Latanoprost: Increases the natural outflow of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye).

  2. Timolol: Reduces the production of aqueous humor at its source.

By attacking the pressure from both sides—increasing drainage and decreasing production—Xylase-T helps prevent damage to the optic nerve and preserves your long-term vision.

⚠️ Critical Safety Warning

Permanent Change in Eye Color: Latanoprost may cause a permanent increase in the brown pigment of the iris (the colored part of the eye). This is most common in eyes with mixed colors (e.g., blue-brown or green-brown). It may also cause your eyelashes to become darker, thicker, or longer. Systemic Absorption: Because it contains Timolol (a beta-blocker), this medication can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Use with extreme caution if you have Asthma, severe COPD, or a slow/irregular heartbeat (bradycardia), as it can worsen these conditions.

How to Use

The standard dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) once daily, preferably in the evening. Increasing the frequency of drops may actually decrease the pressure-lowering effect.

Application Technique:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.

  2. Tilt your head back and pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.

  3. Instill one drop without touching the dropper tip to your eye, eyelashes, or any surface.

  4. Crucial: Close your eye and press gently on the inner corner (near the nose) for 1–2 minutes. This "punctal occlusion" prevents the medicine from draining into your throat and reduces body-wide side effects.

Note: If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before using Xylase-T and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative (Benzalkonium chloride) can discolor the lenses.

Common Side Effects

Common localized side effects include eye redness (hyperemia), mild burning or stinging upon instillation, and temporary blurred vision. Systemic side effects related to Timolol may include a slightly slower heart rate, dizziness, or fatigue. If you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, or severe eye inflammation, stop use and contact your ophthalmologist immediately.

Storage Instructions

Unopened Bottle: Store in a refrigerator ($2°C$ to $8°C$) to maintain maximum potency.

Once Opened: The bottle may be stored at room temperature (below 25°C) but must be discarded 4 weeks after opening, even if there is liquid remaining. Keep out of reach of children and protect from direct light.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why do I only use it once a day?

A: Latanoprost is most effective when used once daily. Using it more often can actually cause the eye pressure to rise again.

Q: Can I use this with other eye drops?

A: Yes, but wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between different types of eye drops to ensure the first drop isn't "washed out" by the second.

Q: Will the color of my eyes really change?

A: It is possible, especially if your eyes are not purely brown. This change happens slowly and is usually permanent, even if you stop the medication.

Q: Is "Xylase" also a tablet?

A: Yes, there is a separate product called Xylase Tablet (Pancreatin/Simethicone) used for digestion. Ensure you are using the Xylase-T Eye Drops for your glaucoma and not the digestive supplement.

Q: Do I need a prescription?

A: Yes. Because glaucoma requires precise diagnosis and regular monitoring of eye pressure, a valid prescription is mandatory at Sanlive Pharmacy.
