BCG is a live-attenuated vaccine derived from a weakened strain of Mycobacterium bovis. It works through a cell-mediated immune priming mechanism: once injected, the live bacteria stimulate the body’s T-lymphocytes to recognize and fight tuberculosis (TB) bacilli. While its effectiveness against adult lung TB varies, it is highly effective (up to 80%) at preventing the most lethal forms of the disease in children, such as Meningitis TB (infection of the brain) and Miliary TB (disseminated infection throughout the body).
In Nigeria, BCG is a mandatory "Birth Dose" vaccine under the National Programme on Immunization (NPI). It is available through maternity hospitals and registered pharmacies like Sanlive Pharmacy, ensuring you receive authentic, laboratory-verified vials stored in strict Cold-Chain refrigeration (2°C to 8°C). This is critical because the live bacteria in BCG are extremely sensitive to light and heat; exposure to the Nigerian sun or a broken cold chain will kill the vaccine, leaving the newborn completely unprotected against TB.
Important: This is a high-sensitivity live biological. The "Cold-Chain" Rule: You must transport and store BCG in a refrigerator and protect it from light (keep it in the box). The "Intradermal" Only Rule: This vaccine must be injected into the top layer of the skin (usually the left upper arm) by a trained professional; if injected too deeply into the muscle, it can cause a large, painful abscess. The "Normal Scar" Note: It is normal and expected for a small sore or "pustule" to form at the injection site 2 to 6 weeks after the shot, which eventually leaves a permanent small scar.
BCG Vaccines are primarily used for:
Preventing Childhood TB Meningitis: Protecting the brain from life-threatening tuberculosis infections
Miliary TB Defense: Preventing the bacteria from spreading through the bloodstream to all organs
Neonatal Immunization: Providing the very first layer of immune defense for newborns in Nigeria
Bladder Cancer Therapy: Using a specialized high-dose version (Intravesical) to treat early-stage bladder tumors
Providing High-Level Protection for infants living in TB-burdened environments
Offering a Single-Dose Solution: One shot at birth usually provides protection for many years
Reducing the Global TB Burden: Serving as the most widely used vaccine in human history
This vaccine is intended for:
All healthy newborns in Nigeria as soon as possible after birth
Older children (under 5 years) who missed their birth dose and test negative on a Tuberculin (PPD) skin test
Healthcare workers at high risk of exposure to multi-drug resistant TB
Not recommended for: Individuals with severely weakened immune systems (e.g., advanced HIV/AIDS or those on high-dose steroids). It is strictly contraindicated for anyone who has already had a "Positive" PPD skin test or has already had TB. Use with caution if the baby has a skin infection at the site of injection. Consult our pharmacist if the baby was born to a mother with HIV; the vaccine may be delayed until the baby's status is confirmed. Consult your doctor if the child has a high fever; wait until they recover before giving the vaccine.
Administered via Intradermal (ID) injection (0.05ml for infants, 0.1ml for older children) into the deltoid of the left arm.
The "Reconstitution" Tip: The powder must be mixed with the provided diluent gently; once mixed, the vaccine must be used within 4 to 6 hours and kept on an ice pack. Any remaining liquid after 6 hours must be discarded.
The "No Rub" Rule: Do not clean the injection site with alcohol after the shot, as this can kill the live vaccine bacteria.
Consistency is Vital: Ensure the "BCG scar" is checked by a nurse during the 6-week immunization visit; if no scar or reaction appears, a repeat dose may sometimes be required.
The "Light" Tip: The vaccine vial is usually amber-colored to protect it; keep it inside the cardboard box until the moment of use.
The "Healing" Note: The small ulcer that forms 3 weeks later should be left alone; do not apply ointments, bandages, or "hot water" to it.
BCG triggers a slow, localized immune reaction, potentially causing:
The BCG Pustule: A small red bump that turns into a sore and then a scar (this is a sign it is working)
Swelling of the lymph nodes under the left armpit (Lymphadenitis)
Local Abscess: If the needle went too deep, a larger collection of pus may form
Mild fever for 24 hours after the injection
Rare but serious: Disseminated BCG Infection (only in severely immunocompromised children)
Rare: Keloid scarring at the injection site
Seek medical advice immediately if the armpit swelling becomes very large and red, if the injection site won't stop oozing after 3 months, or if the child develops a persistent fever.

Does BCG protect against "Adult Lung TB"?
While BCG is excellent at protecting children's brains and organs, it is much less effective at preventing the typical "coughing" TB found in adults. Adults still need to practice good hygiene and seek treatment if they have a chronic cough.
Why is there a "Sore" on my baby's arm?
Don't be alarmed! That sore is the "BCG Reaction." It means your baby's immune system is learning how to fight TB. Just keep it clean and dry; it will heal into a small scar on its own.
Can my baby get BCG at the "Same Time" as Hep B?
Yes. In Nigeria, babies usually receive BCG, Hepatitis B (Birth dose), and Oral Polio (OPV 0) all on the same day, usually before leaving the maternity ward.
Where can I purchase BCG in Nigeria?
You can fill your neonatal or specialist immunization request for verified BCG at Sanlive Pharmacy & Stores for guaranteed product integrity and professional pediatric health support.
