Gardasil 9 is the most advanced Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine available, designed to protect against nine specific strains of the virus. Manufactured by MSD (Merck & Co.), it builds upon the original Gardasil by adding protection against five additional high-risk HPV types. It is a sterile, recombinant vaccine that stimulates the immune system to prevent cancers and physical lesions caused by the most prevalent HPV strains globally.
Product Type: 9-Valent Recombinant HPV Vaccine
Manufacturer: MSD (Merck & Co.)
Target Strains: HPV Types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58
Pack Size: 0.5ml Pre-filled Syringe or Single-dose Vial
Route: Intramuscular (IM) Injection
Availability: Strictly Prescription/Clinical Administration
Suitable For: Females and Males aged 9 to 45
Gardasil 9 is indicated for the prevention of diseases caused by the covered HPV strains. It is highly effective for:
Cervical, Vulvar, and Vaginal Cancers: Protecting women against the primary causes of these reproductive cancers.
Anal Cancer: Providing protection for both males and females against HPV-related anal malignancies.
Genital Warts (Condyloma Acuminata): Preventing painful and recurring warts caused specifically by HPV types 6 and 11.
Precancerous Lesions: Preventing the development of abnormal cell growths (dysplasia) that can lead to cancer over time.
Oropharyngeal Cancer: Increasingly used to reduce the risk of HPV-related throat and back-of-the-mouth cancers.
Preventative Only: Gardasil 9 is a vaccine to prevent future infection. It does not treat active HPV infections, existing genital warts, or established cancer. Yeast Allergy: Do not take Gardasil 9 if you have a severe allergy to yeast, as the vaccine is produced using a yeast-based process. Fainting Risk: Fainting (syncope) can occur after HPV vaccination, particularly in adolescents. It is mandatory to remain seated or lying down for 15 minutes after the injection for observation. Pregnancy: Vaccination is not recommended during pregnancy; if you become pregnant during the series, wait until after delivery to complete the remaining doses.
Gardasil 9 must be administered by a healthcare professional, typically in the deltoid muscle of the upper arm.
Standard Vaccination Schedules:
Ages 9–14: A 2-dose schedule is often sufficient (Dose 2 given 6–12 months after Dose 1).
Ages 15–45: A 3-dose schedule is required for full, long-term immunity:
First Dose: On the elected date.
Second Dose: 2 months after the first dose.
Third Dose: 6 months after the first dose.
The most common side effects are localized to the injection site, including pain, swelling, and redness. Systemic reactions may include a mild headache, dizziness, nausea, or a low-grade fever. These typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours. If you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, or severe hives), seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Cold Chain Maintenance: Gardasil 9 is extremely temperature-sensitive. It must be stored in a medical refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. It must never be frozen. Exposure to freezing temperatures or excessive heat will neutralize the vaccine's active components. Keep the syringe/vial in the original carton to protect it from light.
Q: How is it different from Cervarix?
A: Cervarix protects against 2 strains (16, 18) and is for females only. Gardasil 9 protects against 9 strains (adding 6, 11 for warts and 31, 33, 45, 52, 58 for broader cancer coverage) and is for both males and females.
Q: Why should boys get the HPV vaccine?
A: Vaccination protects males from genital warts and anal/throat cancers. It also prevents them from passing the virus to their future partners, contributing to "herd immunity."
Q: If I already had the original 4-valent Gardasil, can I get Gardasil 9?
A: Yes. You can receive Gardasil 9 to gain protection against the 5 additional high-risk strains not covered by the older version. Consult our pharmacist for the appropriate transition schedule.
Q: Does it protect against all HPV types?
A: While it covers the most dangerous and common strains (responsible for 90% of cervical cancers), it does not cover every rare strain. Regular screenings like Pap smears remain necessary.
